“Next Monday is National Female Breast Appreciation Day.” Did that get your attention? It sure got the attention of a Lawrence, Kansas television reporter -- especially when it was sent by a town mayor.
Tonganoxie, Kansas Mayor Mike Vestal apologized for the email. He said that he thought that he was sending it to male friends, but he happened to send it to a Lawrence, Kansas television reporter, too.
The Lawrence (KS) Journal-World and 6 News described the email as follows:
"The message featured a picture of a topless woman and announced an impending new holiday: National Female Breast Appreciation Day. It went on to say, 'Beats the (expletive) out of Martin Luther King Day! Doesn’t it?'"
According to the Associated Press, Vestal sent the e-mail from a computer that he owns, and from an e-mail account that he pays for, he said. But it is the e-mail account that is listed as his official point of contact as the city’s mayor. Vestal said he did not know how many people he sent the e-mail to. Vestal also declined to say who sent him the e-mail, although he said that person was not involved in city government.
“I apologized. I made a mistake. I owned up to it, and I want to continue serving the people of Tonganoxie,” Vestal told The Kansas City Star.
