Hundreds of unsolicited emails from the Florida Department of Management Services went to hundreds of people not affiliated with the state when it implemented a new email program on Monday, the Walton Sun reports. State officials are still trying to figure out what happened and are releasing few details.
Speculation is that as each state employee logged into the new email system, it created a mailing list from the employee's address list and then sent out a “blast” email to all those on the list. Then, somebody who received these emails replied with “some profane remarks,” said a DMS spokesman.
The problem escalated as people hit the “reply all” button when responding to the email.
